The Weirdest Song Requests We’ve Ever Got (And Played Anyway)
Every DJ has a story—or ten—about that one song request that came out of left field. Whether it’s a power ballad dropped in the middle of a techno set or a novelty tune that somehow stole the show, strange requests are part of the job. And while they might leave us scratching our heads, sometimes they end up being the unexpected hits of the night.
Here are some of the weirdest song requests we’ve ever received… and yes, we played them anyway.
1. “The Birdie Song” at a Black-Tie Gala
We were midway through a sleek, jazzy corporate event when someone insisted we play “The Birdie Song.” At first, we hesitated. But as soon as those chirpy notes kicked in, half the room was flapping their arms and laughing. Classy? Maybe not. Memorable? Absolutely.
2. “Baby Shark” at a 21st Birthday
You’d expect “Baby Shark” to be requested at a toddler’s party—not a grown-up’s milestone bash. But apparently, it was an inside joke among the birthday girl’s friends. Once it played, the whole group burst into a choreographed dance. Never underestimate the power of nostalgia.
3. “Barbie Girl” During a Rock Set
We were deep into a rock-heavy wedding playlist—think AC/DC, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys—when someone requested Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” We thought it would kill the vibe, but it did the opposite. Turns out, everyone needed a silly singalong. Even the groom was shouting the lyrics.
4. The Entire “Shrek” Soundtrack
A festival-style birthday bash took a surreal turn when one guest asked for “anything from Shrek.” Before we knew it, we were playing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” followed by “I’m a Believer” and “Hallelujah.” It went down so well, it turned into an unofficial theme for the night.
5. “The Hokey Cokey” at a Hen Do
Amid a packed dancefloor of club bangers and 90s throwbacks, someone shouted out for “The Hokey Cokey.” Within minutes, we had an entire circle of people jumping in and out, shouting the lyrics with wild enthusiasm. It’s weird, but it worked.
6. “Yakety Sax” (Benny Hill Theme) at a Wedding Reception
Right after the bouquet toss, someone (possibly fuelled by a few too many drinks) requested the Benny Hill theme. We gave it a go—and somehow ended up with a spontaneous game of chase around the marquee. The footage was priceless.
7. A Gregorian Chant Remix
Yes, this happened. A guest asked if we had a “techno version of Gregorian chants.” Against all odds, we did. The request came out of nowhere—but it actually became a kind of ambient interlude that gave everyone a breather before the party ramped back up.
Music sets the tone of an event—but sometimes, the weirdest song requests are the most fun. Whether it’s a cheesy classic, a childhood favourite, or just something totally off the wall, these moments remind us that events are about joy, connection, and not taking things too seriously. So next time you’re at a party and get the urge to request something odd—go for it. You might just create the highlight of the night.
